Summary Statement:

The Executive Director is responsible and accountable to the Board of Directors of the Cosmos Group of Companies (“Board”) and provides direction and leadership for the operations of the organization toward the achievement of Cosmos’ vision, mission, values and goals.  The purpose of this position is to serve as the lead member of Cosmos’ Senior Leadership Team and help provide primary organizational, fiscal, and strategic leadership and direction for the well-being and sustainability of the Cosmos Group of Companies which is comprised of profit-oriented and non-profit (including social enterprises) organizations.


             Reports to:                     Formerly reports to Board Chair on behalf of the Board of Directors.  Functionally reports, communicates, supports and engages with the Board of Directors and/or its established Board Committees.

             Direct Reports:             Three direct reports and a total organizational staff of approximately 100.

             External Contacts:       Provincial, federal and local agencies that provide funding and set requirements.  Some of these agencies being: 

  • Alberta Council of Disability Services (ACDS)
  • Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD)
  • Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC)
  • Alberta Bottle Depot Association (ABDA)
  • Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB)
  • United Way


Key Responsibility Areas:

Responsibilities include but are not restricted to the following:

Leadership & People Management

  • Participates in the formulation of the vision and strategic plan and assumes overall responsibility for their fulfillment
  • Implements and communicates the vision and mission of the Organization; guides and directs people to accomplish it
  • Identifies new business opportunities, innovation advancements and vision for the organization as feasible
  • Demonstrates behaviours reflective of Cosmos’ values
  • Determines staffing requirements
  • Directs and monitor the day-to-day administration of the organization and delivery of the programs and services to maintain or improve quality
  • Sets and develops operating policies and standards including human resources, finance, educational and safety programs
  • Assists staff in maintaining effective working relationships with the Board, agencies, customers, donors, businesses, and the public
  • Ensures an up-to-date succession plan is in place for key management positions

Financial Management:

  • Oversees the development of budgets presented for Board approval and monitors and reports on financial results
  • Monitors cash flow and expenditures and ensures appropriate account and record keeping procedures are in place and followed
  • Identifies, solicits, and secures future funding for the operational and capital needs of the organization
  • Ensures effective supervision, management, accountability, and stewardship of all financial resources and organizational assets


  • Ensures effective and relevant customer-centered services and programs
  • Ensures all programs and staff treat customers with dignity and respect
  • Ensures customer conduct policies’ and guidelines are in place and adhered to for the safety of all staff and customers
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations

Board Support

  • Supports the Board in decision-making, planning and establishment of strategic objectives and corporate policies
  • Prepares agenda and supporting documentation for Board meetings in consultation with the Board Chair
  • Ensures Board minutes are created and maintained
  • Provides operational information and updates at intervals determined by Board, and quarterly strategic plan / budget progress reports.  Keeps Board aware of all matters in relation to, among other things, issues, concerns, organizational changes and all influencing factors that may affect the Vision or Mission of the organizations
  • Supports the recruitment, orientation and on-boarding of new Board members including provision of Director Policy Manuals
  • Acts as a resource as required


Community Relations / Engagement

  • Ensures the organization’s mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image
  • Maintains open and constructive relationships with funders, customers, guardians, colleagues, and peer professionals within the community and province
  • Represents Cosmos through various community and provincial boards, working groups and committees
  • Oversees the development and communication of all corporate media information, website content, newspaper articles, social media, brochures, and public presentations regarding business or programs
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with partnering and funding agencies through active  effective and consistent communication



  • Post-secondary degree in Business or Human Services


  • Significant proven leadership skills developed through several years in senior management positions
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and/or related industry would be an asset

  • Problem Solving & Judgement – Ability to assess options and implications to identify problems and solutions; ability to make decisions and provide direction on complex and emerging issues that may have political, community, or administrative implications
